Enough Light for the Next Step

“…looking up, he replied, ‘I see people looking like trees and walking’…” (Mark 8: 24)

Some weeks back, I tried teaching my 2 year old daughter how to walk down the stairs. I told her to fix her eyes on the next step, not on the landing below. “Otherwise”, I told her, “You might miss the next step and fall.”

Life can sometimes be the same way.

Some people try to focus on the future too much that they miss out on the next step. We worry. We become anxious. We lose sleep. But sometimes, God will not show us the end of the tunnel. Instead, God just gives us enough light to see the next step.

All we have to do is be patient, and allow God to reveal His plan for our lives one step at a time. Take the case of the blind man in today’s gospel…

His eyesight was restored in stages. That’s why at one point, all he saw were people looking like trees.

“…looking up, he replied, ‘I see people looking like trees and walking’…” (Mark 8: 24)

In the same way, we are all called to be patient. God may not reveal his plans for you fully in one blow. He does this for a reason. He wants you to trust Him every step of the way.

Today, ask God not so much to show you his full plan, but to give you just enough light (and faith!) to see the next step.

Before you know it, you are standing on the landing — His wonderful plan for your life has been fulfilled!

Taking one step at a time,

Bobby Q.
